The Ubuntu Bowl is the signature product of Zizamele Ceramics.  Ubuntu is a complex Nguni word, "Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu" - the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity.  Or in English "I am, because of who we all are." 

The ceramic Ubuntu Bowl is the African version of the friendship bowl.  Each of these bowls is wheel thrown from stoneware clay with skill and care by the Zizamele potter, Songezo Mrwebi.  The Zizamele artists then create hand-modelled African women figures in clay, which they attach painstakingly to the rim of the bowl.  These clay figures hold hands in a spirit of unity and wear their traditional African headscarves.  Some of them have their babies tied to their back in typical African fashion.  After the bowls are fired in electric kilns, they are painted in Africa's vibrant patterns and colours in a variety of stunning glazes.
